Things to do in Mount Isa
By area, the Isa is the second-largest city in the world. Here’s where to start.

The mine and the city
Mount Isa grew up around one mine after John Campbell Miles found ore here in 1923. The smelter stack and the headframe are still the skyline.

Heritage
Tent House, Casa Grande, the Old Cemetery and the wartime troop camp site. The town has kept a lot of its early history.

Underground
Local miners dug the Underground Hospital in their own time during the war. At Hard Times Mine you go underground in miner’s gear.

Fossils
The Riversleigh Fossil Discovery Centre shows megafauna fossils from the World Heritage-listed Riversleigh fields, and the lab where they’re prepared.

Lake Moondarra
Sixteen kilometres out of town. We go out for the sunset over Transport Bay.

Mary Kathleen
What’s left of a 1950s uranium mining town east of the Isa, and its open pit.

The rodeo
The Mount Isa Mines Rodeo, held in August.
